Haworthia notabilis

Haworthia notabilis, Wolfkloof, West

Haworthia notabilis V.Poelln.

notabilis: noteworthy.

H. notabilis is small, slowly offsetting plant, usually with translucent leave tips and toothed margins with bristle at the top of the leaf. H. notabilis very often grows in close proximity with H. reticulata, usually higher up on the slope. It was described as maraisii var. notabilis, but possible connection with maculata and livida must not be forget. For me makes more sense to keep it separed as own specis for now, until further decision and more exploration are done.

Distribution map

H. notabilis is growing in Robertson area. It is known from several localities and virtually each locality is different. It starts with Buitenstekloof in the West, which was formaly described as H.maculata var. intermedia, now included under notabilis. Bayer mentioned different flowering time of plants from this locality. Next known locality is Noree, between Buitenstekloof and Wolfkloof. Type locality is NW of town at Wolfkloof, where two forms of notabilis can be foundOne is from shale, on the East side of steep valley, it is softer, dark green and less toothed. Second one grows on granite on the West side of the valley, it is lighter green, more translucent and spinescent. Here it grows only 100-200m from reticulata population. Plants from Sandrivier, which is not far away to West, are more whitish and attractive. There is population from the Klaasvoogds, which is without spines, with thinner and longer leaves and without spines. It form dense clusters and grows at bottom of the valley. At Kranskop are plants smaller, without tooth and very well hidden amongst small pebbles. Hayashi and Breuer described ths form as 'calliantha'. Similar plants are growing just NW of Roberston. For now I include under this article all these forms to show the variability.

Haworthia notabilis, Sandrivier

H. notabilis is an easy growing species, in cultivation usually represented only by plants from Wolfkloof. Offsets or seed are best way of propagation.
