H. jansenvillensis is a species from decipiens group. It is quite large plant, from 5 to 12 cm in diameter. The leaves are incurved and erect to sub-erect. Colour is light green with contrasting dense white spines. It is a single or slowly proliferous species.

Distribution map

Its main distribution area is around Jansenville, where it is quite common. Southern most locality is at Campherspoort and in the Nord it has been found close to Graaff-Reinet. In few localities it co-occur with H. odetteae. In Rossouwspoort, E of Jansenville grows very strange form with bluish cooperi like leaves. Around Mentzdam and Waterford grows different forms, which somehow resembles xiphiophylla like elements - they are more yellowish with less spination. Bayer in his Haworthia Revisited 1999 includes these plants from Jansenville under var. pringlei, which was described originally from Ripon (S. Cookhouse) and these are "intermediate" between cooperi and blackbeardiana, which doesn´t make much sense. Recently Bayer described H. decipiens var. virella, which more or less is identical with H. jansenvillensis, it just cover plants from Mt.Stewart area, which are little bit different from typical jansenvillensis. Hayashi described many "new" names from this species, they are all keep as synonym. One of the most attractive form, described as 'kemari' is from Meerlust.

H. jansenvillensis is quite attractive species, not yet well known in cultivation. It grows without any major problems. Propagation by seeds or sometimes by offsets.
