toonensis: abbreviation for origin at Matjiestoon.

H. heidelbergensis var. toonensis differs from var. heidelbergensis being smaller. It has more recurved leaves with distinct trasparent end-area. Some plants are with spines, other are glabrous. Plant remains usually solitairy. In habitat is very localised and difficult to find. It grows in dense bushes.

It occurs only along Slangrivier, Southwest of Heidelberg. At Brakkekuil it grows close to the strange form of retusa / turgida and very green form of G. verrucosa. In cultivation is sofar known only the plants from type locality at Matjiestoon. 

Distribution map
It grows without bigger problems and propagation should be done by seed.
